“I have three treasures, which I have carefully guarded and preserved. The first is love, the second is frugality, and the third is humility that is not ahead of others. The basis for this lies in the protection of heaven. From this point of view, it can be said that Mencius and Lao-tzu's philosophies are mutually compatible.

Mencius touched King Yang Hye's heart by saying that he was invincible. Everyone believes and trusts someone who tells the story they want. But, above all else, the reason Mencius was able to speak confidently to King Yang Hye was based on his firm beliefs. When you have strong convictions and confidence, you can speak with excellence and persuasiveness. You must also have knowledge. Beliefs without knowledge are bound to be empty assertions.


Here, learning to combine knowledge also has the meaning of discipline. No matter how good virtue is, if it is not based on knowledge, it cannot be maintained in moderation. Also, knowledge must be supported by a variety of experiences. You need to develop your insight through knowledge and experience to broaden your magnificence.


Insight is the power to see right through knowledge and experience. Confidence arises when you stand firm in beliefs based on solid knowledge and extensive experience. If you have confidence, you can confidently express your will to anyone in any situation.

From a modern point of view, it is also true that Mencius's logic is overly ideological. However, in a world dominated by extreme materialism and tainted successism, the idealism of the appendix may be more urgent than 'change the world with love'.
