The habit of happiness.

The habit of happiness.

The ancient Greek word eudaimonia translated as 'happiness' is a compound word of eu meaning 'good' and daimon meaning 'spirit'. For the ancient Greeks, happiness was synonymous with 'living well' and 'doing well.

According to Greek philosophy, a happy person is a person who has practised well throughout life, and a person who consistently practices well throughout life has no choice but to have a good personality.

According to Greek philosophy, it is a logical contradiction to say that even a good-natured person can lead an unhappy life.

to practice well. That means you are excellent at what you do.

Everyone tries to 'practice' them to their best in their respective fields. At this point, the goal of practice is 'goodness'.

We do many activities in life. But we cannot excel in everything we do. Every particular activity has a criterion by which we judge whether we are good at it or not. Then, what is the standard for judging 'life' composed of various activities and practices?

If there is good as the ultimate goal of everything we do, then of course there will be the highest good to pursue in our lives as well. According to Aristotle, the highest good is happiness. Happiness is the supreme good of all the good pursued by individual practices. Happiness is the best, the noblest, the most enjoyable.

Happiness is realized only through a good life. Of course, external conditions are also necessary.

A good birth, a good education, good looks, and a wealthy family can contribute to a happy life. However, not all of these are sufficient conditions for happiness.

Happiness can only be realized through 'living well'. Having a lot of money doesn't mean living well, and being healthy doesn't mean living well. When you do your best in everything you do every day, and live life with an attitude of creating the best work of art, you are practising happiness. Happiness is a process, not a state.

Those who do their best while being satisfied with life have the ability to practice good. Aristotle says that the character virtues that bring happiness are accomplished through habit. Whenever I do something, if I get into the habit of thinking 'for what I am doing this, I will naturally have a good personality. If a consistent personality is formed by doing your best and repeatedly practicing for a certain period of time, you can realize the highest good, happiness, at any time.
