Why does life feel so short?

Life doesn't flow, it's filled.

We don't spend every day

I will fill it with what I have.

- John Ruskin

Why does life feel so short?

First, there is a lot to do. Time is more in demand than supply. There is a lot of work to do, but there is always not enough time.

In the last moments of life, the rarest and most precious thing is time. As long as we can breathe, we are short of breath, and we die.

Second, because we forget the past. The days I have lived are long, but the memory capacity is small, and the past feels like a fleeting moment. Looking back, only intense events are laid out like a stepping-stone, and trivial daily routines are erased. The time connected only with such selective memories inevitably feels shorter than it really is.

People tend to repeat what they have succeeded in. Without thinking about why things went well, they try to repeat the past unconditionally. But past successes should also be forgotten. The best way to forget the past but successfully forget it is to learn a lesson. Although life may feel short, you must learn a lesson and forget the rest in order not to let it go to waste.

Third, life is short to waste time. When I look back on the past, my present stops and time are wasted. I often sit down in anger or frustration, endlessly reminiscing about my failed memories, my sad heart, and the sadness of not being recognized. Repeating flashbacks is dangerous because you get stuck in it without acting.

Seneca finds the reason life is short in waste.

We're not short-lived, we're wasting a lot of time. Life is long enough. If you write well, your lifespan is enough to do great things.

It's not that human lifespans are short, it's that humans have shortened their lifespans, and it's not that they don't have enough lifespans, it's that we waste our lifespans.
