The Cognitive Revolution: The Relationship Between Biology and History

The Cognitive Revolution: The Relationship Between Biology and History

The position of the genus Homo in the food chain was firmly in the middle until recently.

It only was 400,000 years ago that humans began to regularly hunt. Furthermore, it only was 100,000 years ago that humans jumped to the top of the food chain with the advent of Homo sapiens.

Jumping from the middle to the top in one breath had great results.

Other animals at the top of the pyramid, such as lions and sharks, gradually rose to that position but it took millions of years for them. So the ecosystem was able to develop checks and balances to prevent lions and sharks from causing undue destruction. As lions' predation increased, gazelles evolved to run faster, hyenas evolved to be more cooperative, and rhinos evolved to become more ferocious.

In comparison, humans peaked so quickly that the ecosystem did not have time to adapt. Moreover, humans themselves have failed to adapt. Most of Earth's apex predators are dignified beings. It has been filled with confidence as a result of millions of years of domination.

On the other hand, Sapiens is close to the dictatorship of the developing countries of Latin America. Full of fear and concern for their position, which has made them cruel and dangerous. Many of the historical tragedies, from deadly wars to ecological destruction, have resulted from such leaps too quickly.

I hope the fear contained in the genes will not be turned into the name of survival. I hope that I will be the person who can awaken me so as not to be swayed by the intrinsic desire to maintain the top position.

Biology determines the basic limits of Homo sapiens' behavior and abilities. All history takes place within the bounds of this biological realm.

However, because this realm is extremely wide Sapiens can play a huge variety of games. Sapiens' ability to create fiction has made it increasingly complex games, which evolve and become more sophisticated with each generation.

Consequently, to understand the behavior of sapiens, we must describe the course by which their behavior has historically evolved. If we were only talking about biological restraints, it would be like a radio announcer broadcasting a World Cup match and detailing the condition of the field rather than explaining what the players were doing.
