"As far as happiness is concerned, good and evil in themselves are irrelevant. A person who is more satisfied with doing evil is happier than a person who is not very satisfied with doing good... Happiness is a personal and special thing, a virtue. It can be found in the absence of evil, even in the midst of iniquity... Roll around in the mud like a pig, and you will be happy in your own way." - La Metri


People often talk about pleasure and try to build a fence called goodness. In other words, pleasure becomes pleasure only when it belongs to the good. This is because human beings are deeply ingrained in the consciousness that they are ethical beings. However, as La Metri argues, there was already a trend in the 18th century that pleasure could be found in sin. In other words, Kant's assertion that "what makes men happy is very different from making men good" is at work.


Efforts to confine happiness within an ethical framework are still ongoing, and it is still valid to argue that the meaning of happiness differs from person to person as individual tastes are different. However, this position makes it difficult to define happiness.


Doubt happiness.


In fact, this supreme value may be an empty concept

At this point, wouldn't it be impossible to define happiness?


Happiness is different for each person, like personal taste, and if it can be found even in evil deeds, what definition of happiness can we have?


Nevertheless, we sometimes find definitions of happiness.
