What is good for humans?

What is good for humans?

The ultimate purpose of life and being self-sufficient is happiness.

The good is different in each act and skill.

It is different in medicine, it is different in military science, and so on.

So what is good in all cases?

It's obviously something that other things are done for. In medicine it is health, in military science it is victory, in architecture it is a house, and in other cases it is something else. In other words, it is good that all actions and choices have an end.

Everyone works for the purpose of something else. Therefore, if we have one purpose, it is a good to be realized, and if we have multiple purposes, it will be a good to be realized.

It is clear that there are many ends, and not all ends are ultimate ends, some of which we choose as means to other ends, such as wealth, flutes, and instruments. But the supreme good is definitely the ultimate. So if there is only one ultimate goal, it is a good, and if there are multiple ultimate ends, the more ultimate of them is the good to be found.

What is worth pursuing for its own sake is called more ultimate than it is worth pursuing because of something else.

What is desirable for its own sake and which is never desirable for anything else is called ultimate.

Above all else, happiness seems to be the unconditional ultimate.

Happiness always chooses for itself, never for anything else.

This is not the case with honor, pleasure, intelligence, and all virtues. They choose for themselves, and they choose for happiness, believing that they will lead a happy life through them. But no one chooses happiness for those things or for anything else.

From the point of view of self-sufficiency, the conclusion would be the same.

The ultimate good is thought to be self-sufficient. Here, self-sufficiency is defined as a state in which there is no shortage of things, which in itself makes life desirable. We think that happiness is like that. Furthermore, we regard happiness as the most desirable and not as one of many.

For if happiness is regarded as one of many, the good will be greater when the best is added, and the greater of the two is always preferable. Thus, happiness is clearly ultimate and self-sufficient as it is the goal of our actions.

What is happiness called the supreme good?

Humans have specific functions that are unique to them as human beings.

If we think of human functions as a specific life, a rational activity of the soul (conformity to reason, thinking with reason) or a series of actions, then a good human function is to perform these actions well, and all functions have virtues commensurate with them. If it is to be practiced properly, then human goodness is, after all, the activity of the soul worthy of virtue, and if there are not one but many virtues, then it is the activity of the soul worthy of the best and most perfect virtue.

This activity of the soul must continue throughout life.

Just as spring does not come overnight just because a swallow flies, people do not become happy overnight or in a short period of time.
