君子上達 小人下達

Learning flows from the bottom up to the high.

A gentleman faces upwards and a small man faces downwards.

(君子上達 小人下達) ..

- Analects

It means that a gentleman goes through high-level studies and disciplines to rectify himself and create a better world, but a small man concentrates on fulfilling his own interests and greed.

In addition, <Heonmun> contains words that tell how to do it. That's 'Hahak Sangdal'.

It means that no matter how high ideals and dignified life are pursued, daily learning must be a prerequisite.

Education must first teach the near and small, and then the far and great. If you do not go through the process of solidifying the basics properly in order to achieve quick results and teach high-level things first, you will collapse at some point, like building a castle on sand.

However, if you stop at something close and small, you will not be able to make progress in your studies.

The beginning of learning is small and close, but the end of learning must reach a higher ideal.

All teachings begin with the fundamentals of humanity. And it leads to higher and higher levels. If you do not have this foundation, you will not be able to achieve self-discipline, let alone bring peace to the world. No matter how talented you are, no matter how educated you are. You may be successful, but you cannot be a person who gives virtue to others and influences them for good. In the end, you often end up destroying yourself.

From the lower level to the higher level, from the dark to the light, from the subtle reason to the vast universe, it is the path of science.

Pursuing only high, bright, and expansive is not true science.

We must not dwell on the low, dark, and subtle things.

But everything can't be done unless you have to start from here, low.

It is an illusion to say only high ideals while neglecting small things and failing to keep up with ordinary daily life. The lives of these people are also futile. No matter where you are, you have to roll your feet to make sure that the place you are stepping on is on a solid foundation. If there is only an empty sound or the floor is easily torn down, you must look back.

If you want to climb high, you have to climb one step at a time from the bottom of your daily life.
