The starting point of learning, wonder.
The starting point of learning, wonder.
What fascinates us is 'work'. We marvel when we come across some wonderful works of art. Be it a work of art or a work of nature. In other words, we treat wonderful art and nature as one work. When we think of it as a 'work' rather than just feeling beautiful or cool, we contemplate the arts beyond the work.
Admiration is the starting point for arousing curiosity in the arts. It is only when an encounter with an admirable object precedes that curiosity arises about the art of turning that object into a work of art. Therefore, the first step to start studying is admiration.
People do not pay attention to objects that do not marvel at them. And even if you pay attention once, if the admiration and fascination are not intense, the attention will not last. Learning does not occur unless it encounters an object that inspires awe strong enough to sustain attention.
What I have never met or thought of, and therefore absolutely unknown, fascinates me. It's annoying but it's beautiful. So people want to understand it. Questions arise.
Why is that beautiful?
How can I explain that beauty?
What makes that beautiful?
Furthermore, what is beauty?
Wanting to know that confused me, that turns out to be a question.
This is why wonder opens the door to learning.
is to ask questions. In other words, I don't ask questions unless there is something that marvels at me.
The fact that there is a name and order behind the 'disorder' that astonished me, this leads the aesthetic fascination into an intellectual process. You will want to differentiate through study. To have a name is the result of discernment. Because we can distinguish them, we can give each one a name.
The greatest power of knowledge is discernment. It is the power of knowledge that makes it possible to discern the marvellous but not yet discernable. This is the heart to start studying.
