 Let's dig the roots

The Tao of the University consists in illuminating bright virtues, in renewing the people, and in staying in the supreme good.

Only after knowing where to stay can there be a certain direction; only after there is a certain direction can one be calm; only after calm can one be at peace; only after calm can there be thoughtful; and only after consideration can one achieve achievement.

Things have a beginning and an end, and things have a beginning and an end. Knowing the precedent and aftermath of work is close to the Way.

In the past, those who wished to bring light to the world first ruled their own country. And whoever wanted to rule his own country first straightened his own household. A man wishing to straighten his own house first cleaned his body. Whoever wanted to polish his own body first straightened his mind. He who wished to set his own heart right, first made his will sincere. Those who wished to sincere his own will first extend his knowledge to the limit. Such expansion of knowledge consists in exploring things.

Knowledge is reached after things are explored. After attaining knowledge, the will becomes sincere. After the will is sincere, the heart is right. After the mind is right, the body is purified. After the body is cleaned, the house becomes straight. After the country is ruled, the whole world becomes peaceful.

From the celestial ruler to the common people, everyone considers cleansing the body as fundamental.

The root is disturbed, but the end is not governed. There is no case of treating the subject who should be treated rudely and treating the subject who should be treated rudely.
