Examine yourself.

 Examine yourself.

Gentlemen act according to moderation, and small men act against moderation.

Moderation of a gentleman is to have the virtues of a gentleman and to be in the middle at the right time. To act against the moderate of a small person, that is, to act against the moderate, is to have the heart of a small person and act without any hesitation.

Even though the Way is always with us, few people can practice the Way of Moderation. Because people don't take good care of themselves, the negative effects of being excessive or lacking in knowledge and actions appear.

Confucius said:

I know why the Tao is not practised. A wise person is too much, and a foolish person is too short. I know why the Tao doesn't come out brightly. A wise man is too much, and an ugly man is too short.

Everyone eats and drinks, but few people know the taste.

A wise person has too much knowledge and thinks that there is no further action in the Way, while a foolish person falls short of knowledge and does not know the source of what to do. Because of this, the Tao is not always practised. A wise person thinks that he has too many deeds and no longer knows the Way, and an ugly person falls short of his deeds, so he does not seek the source that he should know. This is why the Tao is not always brightly revealed. - Joo Hee

(A wise person and a foolish person can be divided in the aspect of knowing, and the wise person and the ugly person in the aspect of the action.)

The Tao cannot be separated from us, but since people do not look after themselves, there is a negative effect that is excessive or insufficient. After all, like the air and water we eat and drink every day, we are always close to ourselves, but just as we do not know the taste of the air or water we deal with every day, we cannot observe the Way that permeates our lives as well.
