frame of possession and existence
The frame of possession and existence
A desk and a chair, a plate of fruit, and a violin. What else does a person need to be happy? (Albert Einstein)
One of the most influential thinkers of the 20th century, Erich Fromm, points out the harm caused by material abundance caused by industrialization and emphasizes the transition from the life of possession to the life of being in his book Possess or Existence.
In everyday life, the field where the possession frame and the existence frame most frequently contrast the area of consumption. A person who purchases a thing with the frame of existence while buying the same thing pays attention to the new experience that he or she will taste through the product. But those who purchase with a frame of ownership focus on the possession itself.
Experiencing a new life through purchasing an object brings greater happiness to many people than purchasing it for the sake of owning it. It is because most of the things purchased for experience are used in relationships with people. Sharing experiences like this can bring true happiness to people.
A wise consumer should try to avoid the frame of possession and have the frame of being as much as possible. This is because the frame of existence is more important to the quality of life than the frame of possession.
