A culture that blossoms through the incongruity of freedom and equality

Since the French Revolution, people all over the world have increasingly come to see equality and individual freedom as fundamental values. However, the two values contradict each other. There is no way to guarantee equality but to limit the freedoms of those who are better off. Ensuring that all individuals do what they want will inevitably undermine equality.

The world today is failing to reconcile freedom and equality. That contradiction is an inseparable part of all human cultures. In fact, it is the engine of culture, the source of the creativity and vitality of our species.

Cognitive dissonance is often seen as a failure of the human psyche. But in fact, it is a key asset. It would have been impossible to build and maintain human culture itself if it were not for people's ability to harbour contradictory beliefs and values.

A culture that blossomed brilliantly on the incongruity of freedom and equality,

All man-made orders have internal contradictions.

Culture constantly tries to mediate these contradictions, and this process fuels change.
